Herridge / McRae Grudge Match

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

It will be an old-fashioned, head-to-head, grudge match, as Subaru takes on Mitsubishi in a battle of the Japanese giants.

“It’s going to be great fun, both for us and the crowd”, commented Dean. “These cars, the Subaru WRX STi and the Mitsubishi EVO, have dominated the World Rally Championship and regional rally championships for much of the past 15 years. It will be great to see them going one-on-one again. Both marques have a large following, here in Australia and right around the world. So expect to the crowd to getting involved.”

Along with the ‘Rally Explosion’, the Festival of Speed will also feature hot laps by Mark Webber in his Red Bull F1 car, Dean Fiore in his Triple-F V8 Supercar, V8 touring cars from the 1970s, Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette and Cobra supercars, current and vintage motorbike, Truck racing and even an Eagles vs Dockers race.

Targa West – Leg 3

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

With only five seconds splitting them at the start of the day, and the pair traded times during the morning and afternoon stages. And although Liddle managed to come within three seconds of the Maximum Motorsport boss, Rob was able to extend that margin over the first two of three passes of the super special stage and take fifth place by seven seconds.

Ironically, Liddle’s Subaru WRX STi had been tuned by Maximum Motorsport in the week prior to the event. And the result means Rob has not only competed in each running of Quit Targa West, he has finished in the top-10 each time.

Behind them Graham Furness held on to 10th place, a position that didn’t really reflect the pace he showed across all three days of the event. A miscalculation during day one meant he incurred a 70 second time penalty, causing him to drop seven places to 14th.

If not for the penalty, he could have finished a few positions higher.

At the end of day two Bryan McGrath found himself locked in a battle with three other crews for 11th place. But on the transport to the first of Sundays stages, the clutch in his Impreza failed. Although the Maximum Motorsport mechanics quickly fitted a new clutch, Bryan incurred time penalties for missing the opening loop of three stages. He did rejoin for the final six stages, and brought his Subaru home in 32nd place.

The Maximum Motorsport team now begins to prepare for Targa High Country in November, with both Dean Herridge and Graham Iddles set to contest the first round of the Australian Tarmac Championship.

Targa West – Leg 2

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

After finishing leg 1 in 14th place, Furness quickly began to pick up positions, and completed Saturdays stages 9th, 43 seconds behind 8th-placed Jon-Paul Van Loenhout.

Meanwhile, both Rob Herridge and Bryan McGrath have consolidated their positions. Rob maintained 5th throughout the day, and remains just 21 seconds away from 4th-placed Ross Hamilton.

But Bryan McGrath has a real fight on his hands, in a four-way battle for 10th place with Rohan Green, Kym Illman and Michael Steele, just 10 seconds covering four positions.

The final leg of Quit Targa West will see the crews return to Toodyay and Coondle, north-west of Perth, for five special stages, before returning to Perth city for three passes of a short, spectator-friendly, super special stage.

Targa West – Leg 1

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

“We were on fire early on”, exclaimed Rob at the end of day service stop. “Pre-event we were aiming to finish in the top five. I’ve not been in a rally car since last years Targa West, so I’m a little rusty. We were certainly not expecting to be 5th at this stage. But the car has been great, and we found ourselves in 3rd place during the morning.”

The two-time Australian rally champion stepped in to lead the trio of Maximum Motorsport Subarus, when regular driver Dean Herridge was forced to withdraw due to a busy schedule of promotional commitments with Subaru Australia. And with Dean watching from the sidelines, Rob was more than happy to step into Dean’s 2008 Subaru WRX STi. “Compared to the previous generation WRX STi which I drove last year, this car just has more of everything. It’s more predictable, more stable, it’s easier to drive. There’s a huge difference in the braking. At the moment brakes are a lot better than the driver! I’m not really getting the most out of them right now.”

“We dropped a couple of places in the afternoon. There was no problem in the car, it was just that everyone else was attacking. We had a little hiccup with our timing on one of the stages. You can’t exceed a set average speed, and we were a bit too cautious. I think we gave away three seconds, but at least we avoided a larger penalty.”

Along with Rob, Graham Furness and Bryan McGrath both completed the first day without incident and are split by just three seconds.

Tomorrow the crews head north of Perth, with stages run near the towns of Toodyay in the morning and Bullsbrook in the afternoon.

Three Maximum Cars Take On Targa West

Monday, August 16th, 2010

“We had a great time at Targa West last year”, said Maximum partner Dean Herridge. “It’s our local tarmac event, but last year was the first time I was able to compete in it, and a second-place result was pretty pleasing.”

“This year the dates clash with some of my promotional commitments with Subaru Australia, so I’ve had to pull out. But Dad (Rob Herridge) will be there again. He’s competed in all the Targa West events and has scored top-10 places each time. This year will drive an ’08 WRX STi for the first time. Plus we’re running cars for Graham Furness and Brian McGrath. So even though I won’t be driving in the event, there’ll be plenty of Maximum entries ‘flying the flag’ for Subaru.”

And although Dean won’t be competing at Targa West, he’s been focused on the Australian Tarmac Championship.

“Our 2011 tarmac season starts in November with Targa High Country. It’s the first time this event has been run, and although it includes the same road used in the Mt Buller Sprint, it also incorporates roads around Mansfield and Eildon. In some ways it’s similar in format to Targa Wrest Point, I can’t wait to see if it and I think it will be an event that suits our Subaru WRX STi.”

“Late last year we took just one car and a small crew to the Mt Buller Sprint, and were very pleased to scored a podium at our first attempt. This time we are hoping to take multiple cars from Maximum Motorsport; one for myself and one for Graham Iddles, and we’ll have the full team and a full support team. So we’re going there to have a good hard ‘crack’ at it.”

Along with his tarmac rally commitments, there’s a possibility Dean will return to gravel rallying later this year. “I’ve been talking to one of the leading teams in the Malaysian Rally Championship. We are hoping that I’ll be able to going up there for the final two rounds of the national series in October and December. It’s still early days, but it would be great to get back onto gravel, and in a series I’ve never contested.”

Targa West starts on August 26, Targa High Country on November 5, with information about the progress of all the Maximum Motorsport cars available here on www.maximummotorsport.com.au.

The Maximum Shop Opens

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

The new online shop allows motorsport enthusists from all over the world to access Maximum’s range of rally and race components.

“Maximum Motorsport was founded in 1993 as a specialist motorsport company”, commented Dean Herridge, who announced the launch of the new web site. “Manufacturing specialist rally and race components has always been an important part of our business”.

“The new ‘shop’ means rally and race competitors, both here in Australia and internationally, can make use of the same componentry that we use in our rally cars”.

Along with the specialist race parts that Maximum manufactures in-house, the Maximum Shop also features Monit Rally Computers, VIO in-car video cameras and pace note books, as well as a range of supporter gear including Maximum Motorsport shirts and caps.

“We’re very happy with the look of the site and how easy it is for our customers to use. At present there is a good base of products which we hope to grow over time, once we’ve reviewed our customers feedback and online shopping trends”.

Targa Tasmania – The Finish Line

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Both days were challenging. Saturday was longest day of the event, and included a series of 30+ kilometre stages, just to test the already weary crews and support teams. But overnight rain caused competitors plenty of problems on Sunday mornings tricky mountain stages, with several teams crashing out in the final few stages.

Starting Saturday in seventh place, Dean Herridge and Glen Weston made some gains during the final two days, with the afternoon stages suiting their hard compound tyres. “We had two pretty solid days”, Dean remarked at the end of the event. “I was a little disappointed on Saturday morning. I’d hoped to make up some more time, but it was a bit of a struggle for the first couple of stages. The roads were still pretty greasy and cold. But once it started to dry out, we started to set some reasonable times. And we made some good in-roads during Sunday morning”.

“We lost nearly three minutes on Wednesday morning, and it’s pretty hard to make back that time unless you get a little bit of luck with the weather, or your competition has a problem. We started the event confident that we could challenge Jason and John White for the ATC (Australian Tarmac Championship). But we had a bit of bad luck, and they’ve had a perfect run. So while we could be disappointed, we know we’re punching well above our weight with the Maximum Motorsport Subaru, and it’s a real credit to all the team that we can turn up to an event like this and be competitive against Lambourghinis and Porsches and GT-Rs”.

Of the other Maximum crews, Graham ‘Indiana’ Iddles also struggled on leg 4, but completed Sunday for his best ever Targa Tasmania result. “I really had no rhythm on Saturday. The conditions were pretty tricky, and we made up some positions. We had a spin last year coming into Strahan, so I was a bit tentative. But we’ve improved our stage times this year, so I’m pretty happy with what we’ve managed to achieve”.

Likewise Graham Furness was pleased with his result. “It’s been a good event for us”, said Graham, who shares his car with son Cameron. “We finished 19th outright, and we’re now regularly setting top-20 stage times. That’s what I set out to achieve, which is really pleasing. The only problem I has was that I cut a corner on the Mt Black stage and dented a rim. So we changed two tyres for the final day, but that’s all. The car has been great all event. We had a sticking clutch on Friday, but that was the only problem we’ve had with the car”.

So with Targa Tasmania run for another year, the Maximum Motorsport crew will now return to Perth and begin preparations for their next event, August’s Quit Targa West.

A Solid Day Three

Friday, April 30th, 2010

After the drama of a puncture during yesterday’s first stage, Dean Herridge was looking forward to a trouble-free run. And that’s exactly what happened, the #993 Subaru WRX STi moving up the placings as the day progressed.

“It’s been a good day”, a relaxed Herridge commented. “We’ve not had any issues today. I was a little concerned on the way to Devonport. There was a bit of rain around, and that’s the last thing we want to see with the tyre choice we’ve made. But the rain held off and we had a good run. We’re now up to seventh. There’s a bit of a gap to Jim Richards, but we’ll just keep on chipping away and see what happens”.

“This event always throws up a few surprises. We’ve already seen a number of high-profile teams retire, and there’s still a long way to go before the finish.”

Both Graham Iddles and Graham Furness put in solid performances during Leg 3, improving as the event progresses. “We’ve had a solid day”, Iddles remarked after stage 24. “We’ve improved more than a second per kilometer over last year, so I’m really happy with that. We’re just looking to maintain a consistent pace and make it to the finish. If we can do that, and get some more experience under our belts, then we should continue to improve”.

For the previous three days, Graham Furness has swapped times with the Subaru Impreza of Paul Thomas. And it was a battle that continued today. “We’re having our own private race! Last night we were equal 22nd, but today he snuck ahead by a second. Our aim was to get into top 20 (stage times), and we’ve done that now. So we’ll start again tomorrow and see if we can take back a second or two”.

Tomorrow, the teams leave Launceston for the final time, heading north-west to Ulverston for lunch, then turning south for the long trip to Strahan. The day includes three stages of more than 30 kilometres in length, including Cethana, Riana, and the challenging Hellyer Gorge stage.

A Mixed Day

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

After surviving the wild weather of Leg 1, Dean Herridge started Thursday’s ‘North-East Loop’ in equal fifth place. But his day got off on a wrong note, thanks to a stray rock. Dean explained, “The road was still fairly damp in patches, and we weren’t trying push too hard on cold tyres. But that stage (Sideling) is littered with sharp rocks on the edge of the road, and we had the misfortune to run over one early into the stage. We struggled on as best we could, but the tyre was deflating and eventually disintegrated”.

“I think we lost almost three minutes on the stage and then we had to change a tyre. But we were competitive on the other stages. Our main goal all along was to win the ATC, and there is still a long way to go in this rally. So we’ll start again tomorrow, see if we can make up some time on the crews in front of us, and try and put ourselves in a position where we can capitalise if any of the guys at the front run into problems”.

Adding to the teams woes was the withdrawal of the Brian Green/Fleur Pedersen #987 WRX STi. Although the team worked on the car overnight, the engine was too badly damaged to be repaired in time.

But it was not all bad news, with both Graham Furness and Graham Iddles moving up the leaderboard. “I really enjoyed today”, Graham Furness commented after the final stage. “The twisty sections really seem to suit me. I managed to get into a flow early, and the car handled superbly. The biggest difference from last year is that Cameron and I are starting to work much better together in the car. We’ve made a big improvement the year. It was Cameron’s first Targa last year, and today that experience really started to show. I think we’ve gained around two seconds per kilometre, which is a huge step forward”.

Graham Iddles was also enthusiastic after competing the final stage. “It was my best day of rallying ever!”, exclaimed the two-time ‘Longford Challenge’ champion. “I’m now starting to the trust the (pace) notes and be more committed to them. And as a result our times are improving, and Shane and I working together really well”.

Tomorrow the crews will be tested by eight stages, as they make their way from Launceston to Devenport, returning via Deloraine.

Wet and Windy in Tassie

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

And that caused all sorts of problems for crews, with a number of accidents in the treacherous conditions.

Three of the four Maximum Motorsport crews survived the wild weather, but there were some ‘interesting’ moments along the way. At the end of todays stages, Dean Herridge was the fastest of the Maximum Subarus, sharing equal fifth place and 50 seconds from leader Jason White.

“Given the circumstances, it’s been a reasonable day for us”, Dean explained. “It was wet all day; I think SS5 was the only stage where it didn’t rain. We’re on hard compound tyres, and the conditions just didn’t suit us. We struggled all day, but the main thing is we’re still in the event. We lost a lot of competitive crews today; Kevin Weeks, the Vandenbergs and Tony Sullens are all out. So to have just made it to the end of the day, and be not too far away from the lead, is not too bad of an effort”.

Like Dean, both Graham Furness and Graham Iddles found the conditions testing, but drivers put in solid results to sit 24th and 32nd respectively. “It was a day to be sensible”, Iddles explained. “It would have been easy to loose the car today. There were some sections where the rain was really heavy. So we had to play it safe, slow down, and get to the end of the stages. Which is easier said than done!”

The one sour note was an accident involving Brian Green’s 2.5L WRX STi. The Kiwi hit a post after under-steering off the road on SS4. The impact caused some bodywork damage, but critically a water pipe was split which forced Green and co-driver Fleur Pedersen to stop on the stage. The damage done to the engine was significant, and will force them to sit out the Leg 2 while repairs are made.

Thursday’s ‘North-East Loop’ begins early, with crews heading toward St Helens, on the Tasmanian east coast. Leg 2 takes in six competitive stages, the first being the tricky and twisty ‘Sideling’ stage.
